Does Red Light Therapy Regrow Hair? What the Research Shows

Short answer: for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair thinning), there's genuine randomized-trial evidence that low-level red light can help — but it's not a cure, results take months, and most of the supporting research uses purpose-built devices, not general-purpose panels. Here's what the research actually shows.


How Red Light Affects Hair Follicles

Red light in the 650–660nm range is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase inside hair follicle cells, increasing ATP production — the same core mechanism behind red light therapy's other uses. For hair follicles specifically, research points to a few effects: extending the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair cycle, improving blood flow and nutrient delivery to the follicle, and reducing local inflammation associated with androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss).


The Clinical Research

This is one of the better-studied areas of photobiomodulation. Multiple randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trials — considered the gold standard of clinical evidence — have tested low-level light therapy specifically for androgenetic alopecia, in both men and women. A meta-analysis of these trials found a statistically significant increase in hair density with treatment compared to sham devices, across both comb-style and helmet-style devices, and both short- and long-term treatment courses. Individual 24-week trials have reported measurably greater hair coverage, thickness, and count on the treated side compared to the sham-treated side.

It's worth being specific about what "hair growth" means in this research: the outcome measured is increased density and thickness of existing, miniaturized follicles — not regrowth on scalp that's been bald for years with no active follicles left. A Realistic Timeline

Every positive trial in this research area measured results at 16–24 weeks of consistent use, not weeks. If you're trying red light for hair, plan for a minimum of 4–6 months of regular sessions before judging whether it's working — this is a slower-building effect than red light therapy's skin or acne applications.


Why Device Type Matters

Most of the clinical research on hair growth used devices purpose-built for scalp coverage — helmets and combs designed to deliver consistent light exposure across the whole scalp at a fixed distance. That's a meaningfully different use case than a general-purpose red light panel or a facial LED mask, neither of which is designed or positioned to treat a scalp.

To be transparent: none of Aura Sweden's current products are purpose-built hair-growth devices. Who This Isn't Likely to Help

The research base here is specific to androgenetic alopecia (genetic pattern thinning) in its earlier stages, where follicles are miniaturized but still active. It's not evidence that red light regrows hair on scalp with no remaining active follicles, and it isn't research on other causes of hair loss (autoimmune conditions, medication side effects, or scarring alopecia) — those causes need a different approach, and a dermatologist is the right first step for a proper diagnosis before trying any treatment.
