Red light therapy panels range from $150 portable devices to $4,000 professional full-body systems — and the difference isn't always obvious from a product photo. This guide walks through the factors that actually matter, in the order you should think about them, so you can choose based on what you're treating rather than which panel has the most impressive-sounding spec sheet.


Step 1: Decide What You're Treating

This is the single most important decision, and it determines almost everything else. Ask yourself:

  • Face and neck only (skin tone, fine lines, acne) — a compact panel or LED mask is enough, and you'll pay far less for it.
  • Face plus joints or a specific body part (knee, shoulder, lower back) — a compact-to-mid-size panel gives you enough coverage without paying for space you won't use.
  • Full-body sessions (recovery, sleep, systemic wellness) — you need a full-body panel or a large enough panel that you can reposition it a few times per session.

Since you're sitting close to the device for 10–20 minutes at a time, a few build-quality details matter more than they might seem to at first:

  • Low or zero EMF output — reduces unnecessary electromagnetic field exposure at close range
  • Flicker-free operation — some cheaper LED drivers flicker at a rate that isn't consciously visible but can still cause eye strain over a session
  • Included eye protection — near-infrared light is invisible, so you can't judge intensity by brightness alone; protective eyewear should be included, not an optional add-on
