Athletes and weekend lifters alike have picked up near-infrared light therapy as a recovery tool — but timing and wavelength matter more than most people realize. Here's what the research actually shows, and how to build it into a training routine.

How Near-Infrared Light Helps Recovery
Near-infrared light (810–850nm) penetrates deeper into tissue than red light, reaching muscle fibers beneath the skin. It's absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, boosting ATP production — the energy your cells use to repair micro-tears in muscle tissue after training. The practical effect: reduced inflammation, less delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and faster return to full-intensity training.
What the Research Shows
A 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials found that phototherapy (including near-infrared light) reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness by an average of 43% compared to placebo. Separate randomized trials using 810nm light before exercise have specifically studied optimal power output for skeletal muscle performance and post-exercise recovery.
To be direct about the evidence: not every study finds an effect. At least one randomized crossover trial found no significant difference in performance or soreness using 808nm light on a specific muscle group. The overall body of research leans positive, particularly for whole-body and larger-muscle-group recovery, but it isn't unanimous — full sources are linked on our Scientific Research page.
Pre-Workout vs. Post-Workout Timing
Both timing windows have research support, for different goals:
- Pre-workout (5–10 minutes before training) — associated with modest performance benefits and may reduce injury risk by increasing blood flow to the muscle before load-bearing activity
- Post-workout (within 30 minutes after training) — shows the strongest, most consistent effect on reducing DOMS and accelerating recovery
If you only have time for one session, post-workout is the better-supported choice based on the current research.
Building a Session Protocol
A reasonable starting protocol based on the research above:
- Position the panel 6–12 inches from the muscle group you trained
- Session length: 10–20 minutes per targeted area
- Frequency: after each training session, or 3–5 times per week for general recovery
- Consistency over weeks matters more than any single session — treat it as a recovery habit, not a one-off fix
